The Buckhannon & Northern Branch of the Pittsburg & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE) extended along the west bank of the Monongahela River from Fairmont, WV to the West Virginia-Pennsylvania state line where it connected with another P&LE branch line to Brownsville, McKeesport and Pittsburgh. That 31-mile section of the railroad, from Riversville, WV to the northern line of Monongalia County, was built during 1911-1912, opening up a great coal field on the west side of the river in Marion and Monongalia counties.
