This article, from the Oct. 5, 1918 edition of Railway Review, describes the 2-10-10-2 type steam locomotives which had just been built by the American Locomotive Company for the Virginian Railway for use as pusher engines on the 13.4-mile grade between Elmore and Clarks Gap, West Virginia. The article provides some details the Virginian's use of Mallets to move heavy coal trains over the Clarks Gap grade during the railroad's early years of operation.
