An article published in the March 1917 edition of ''Railway and Locomotive Engineering'' described the triple articulated locomotive, with 2-8-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, that had been recently built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Virginian Railway for use on the railroad's 13.4 mile Clarks Gap grade.
