An article published in the Sept. 10, 1921 edition of Railway Age described the construction of a second track between Elmore and Clarks Gap by the Virginian Railway to relieve congestion on that section of the road. The project of double-tracking was first started in 1918. At the time the article was written the project was in its third stage. The double-tracking of five miles of mainline, the widening of five tunnels, and the widening of five high steel viaducts for an additional track still remained to be done.
