The November 1918 edition of the Railway Mechanical Engineer featured elevation and cross section drawings of the Virginian Railway 2-10-10-2 Mallet articulated compound steam locomotive, that had been recently built by the American Locomotive Works for use as pushers on the Virginian's 13.4-mile grade between Elmore and Clarks Gap, West Virginia.

The November 1918 edition of The Boiler Maker featured an article, Large Boilers for New Mallet Locomotive, about the boiler used on the Virginian 2-10-10-2 locomotives that contained side and cross-section drawings of the boiler.

An article in the October 5, 1918 edition of Railway Review, Heavy Mallet Compound for Virginian Railway, contains some details about the Virginian's planned use of the 2-10-10-2 locomotives together with the railroad's older 2-6-6-0 and 2-8-8-2 Mallets to move heavy coal trains over the Clarks Gap grade during the railroad's early years of operation.
